Al-Anwar Library

The Library of the Govt Degree College Sogam-lolab was established in 2008. The Library moved in to the present premises in 2019, built out of grants provided by the State Government. The College is located in the picturesque valley of Lolab which has also provided a number of great personalities. Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri, is one of the most influential personalities of great stature and a teacher of Allama Iqbal. In resolution the college authority named the library as “Al-Anwar Library”.

College Library

A College Library is a gateway to knowledge and plays an important role in building up a love for reading, research and exploration.

The College has a well-developed Library facility for the students and the staff of the college. Being a center of intellectual development and self-investigation/research, the college library has incorporated in it a lot of user oriented services like reading room facility, internet resource cell, career counseling cell, reference section, newspaper and periodical section and reprographic facility. The college library has a collection of more than 15000 books and other information sources on diverse subjects which has been acquired from time to time since its establishment. The college library follows a flexible collection development policy which is based on the feedback of students, suggestions of the teaching faculty members and case study of learning behavior of the library users.

 With the increasing ICT applications in different circles of the education system the college library is also working on a comprehensive project of automation of the library housekeeping operations like acquisition, organization, and dissemination of information and user oriented services. The fully automated library management system is complete in all respect and the college library services and operations is completely working on a computer based automated system.

The College library provides student identity cards to the college students which is a prerequisite for future references and activities like use of library services, class room attendance, filling up of scholarship and examination forms, attending mid-term and final examination, participating in college seminars/debates/games and sports and other events.

I hope this message finds you well. As you embark on your academic exploration I welcome you in the Al-Anwar Library, Government Degree College, Sogam- Lolab to the start of a new academic track. As your College Librarian, I am elated to support you on your path of education and also committed to provide resource accessibility, information literacy that fosters a learning environment to enhance your educational experience. As you all are aware that today’s libraries should not merely be store-house of books instead it should serve as experimental spaces, workshop and tutorial labs, data harvesting centres, knowledge hubs, research centres and even much more than that. With the evolution of Web 1.0 to Web 4.0 the libraries have also showed transition from Library 1.0 to Library 4.0 where digital libraries can be accessed virtually in seconds for vital resources and our college library is not an exception as Al- Anwar Library is fully automated using KOHA ILMS with access to all bibliographical information through Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). I believe that besides textual material, references and career books I should make you aware about electronic library and e-resources like NDLI, NLIST, eGyanKosh, MOOC platforms in order to facilitate you succeed in your academic pursuits. So please without hesitation to reach out with any clarification or for any assistance. College Library Infrastructure

The library is housed in the first floor of the main college building and is internally built to provide a wide range of services to the library users. It has one reference section, one text section, and library processing section, career counseling cell, newspaper and periodical section internet resource cell and librarian’s room.

Processing Section

College Library Processing Section

The College library processing section is the main section in which the housekeeping operations like classification, cataloguing, bibliographic record and library user’s profiles are being generated for easy and automated circulation of the information sources. The library processing section is being equipped with computers connected in a LAN network. Koha LMS (A Library Database Management System (DBMS)) is in use in the college library for automated management of the library operations. In addition barcoding and smart ID Cards are being printed in this section.

The library has been using the Koha LMS, integrated software build and maintained by koha Community, with all the modules for the library housekeeping operations. The library Online Catalogue database has more than 15000 records of books (Bibliographic Information). Using koha OPAC, users can search the Library Online Catalogue by Author, Title, Subject, and keywords. Also, the users can know the latest additions of periodicals and books and the status of a document (whether on shelf or on issue).

IT INFRASTRUCTURE

College Library IT Infrastructure

  1. Internet Connection: the College library is supported by a BSNL leased line internet connection (Speed: 8MBPS) as well as BSNL OFC connection (speed: 100MBPS).
  2. Internet Resource Cell/Browsing Center: The internet resource cell of the college library includes 20 latest modal computers connected with LAN and broadband internet service connected to a shared latest modal printer.
  3. Processing Section: the processing section of the college library is equipped with 3 clients PC’s connected to the server PC with LAN. The college library Processing unit has one scanner, one card printer and one barcode printer.
  4. CCTV Camera Surveillance system: to cope up with the issue of theft, page cutting and misuse of the library resources and services the college library is fully equipped with CCTV Cameras. 14 high quality cameras remain in task to record the activities of library users in the college library block.
  5. Library Automatic magnetic gate: face recognition machines are installed on the entry and exit of the college library gate integrated with magnetic lock. The gate opens only when a user’s face is recognized by the Face recognition system on entry and exit. The whole data regarding users in and out details are captured through software which can be used for records.
  6. Library Android Application: An android application constructed which can be easily downloaded and used for accessing Library web-OPAC and other important open educational resources. Around 15 links have been provided in the android application which leads to reliable and up to date e-resources.

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

Library Collection development policy

Al-Anwar Library of the college follows as comprehensive collection development policy.

  1. The lists of requisite books are being collected from each department and students of the college each year based on the state budget.
  2. For judicious use of the library budget the list collected from the departments are cross checked with the available library collection and the list are modified accordingly.
  3. The list is sent to the library committee for recommendations and finally gets approved by the head of the institution.
  4. After completing the laid down procedures the lists are forwarded for supply as per financial code.
