DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY
The Department of Physics has been established in the year 2018. Ten (10) students were enrolled in Physics by that time and the Department was housed in one staff room and one laboratory room, as the college was temporarily operating in Govt. BHSS Sogam.
Prof. Nazir A. Ganaie was the first permanent faculty to start teaching of Physics in May, 2020. The Department right from the day of its establishment has been on a course of speedy progress.
The Department offers BG Courses in Physics and is affiliated to the University of Kashmir, Srinagar. The Department has grown enormously in terms of infrastructure, and attained self-sufficiency in terms of facilities required in the labs for conducting the lab course smoothly. In addition to the normal funding given by the Govt. of J&K, the UGC as well has provided sufficient funds for purchase of books, laboratory apparatus and other equipment.
Presently, the Department housed in the Main Block on the first floor consists of one fully equipped laboratory, one staff room for teaching faculty, one room for the laboratory assistants, one dark room and one store room. The Department has one permanent faculty member and one laboratory bearer.
The laboratory has one completely digital flat panel interactive board for demonstration of laboratory experiments and practical work.
The college library has rich collection of about 350 standard books covering almost all the branches of Physics.
The 2018 batch is the first batch to graduate from the college this year.
The students are given individual care, they are provided study material (in WhatsApp groups, Telegram groups and Google Classrooms) after teaching-learning of a particular topic is completed. The Departments makes optimum use of the Information & Communication Tools (ICT). The teaching-learning process is evaluated via regular class tests and assignments given to the students.

The department of kashmiri was established in the year 2017. The department has remained focus of activities with regard to the development of kashmiri language. The teaching programme of the department is designed to provide students, the knowledge of kashmiri language and literature. DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
Among other science faculties, the Department of Zoology was also started in 2017 in the College to teach the students at under graduate level. Zoology deals with understanding of the animal world from outside as well as at molecular level. The history of zoology traces the study of the animal kingdom from ancient to modern times. Even the prehistoric man needed to study the animals and plants in his environment in order to exploit them and survive.
The department of Zoology is housed in the main College building with spacious class rooms and laboratory facilities. Every effort is being made to make the subject interesting and attractive through teaching and demonstrations. The Department is competent in academic excellence and offers study courses like B.Sc with zoology as one of the core subjects and provides opportunities to educate and inspire students for pursuing higher education in many job oriented streams. If zoology is taken as one of the subjects in graduate studies, one will have an opportunity to study other subsidiary fields like Animal Biodiversity, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates, Developmental Biology, Immunology, Physiology and Applied Zoology (Apiculture, Aquaculture and Sericulture). On regular basis new equipments are being added to laboratories to meet the current needs of students in zoology and also new text books are added every year to the library. The study tours are also being organized for the students to collect fauna from different areas of Kashmir as a requirement of their studies.
The department has developed good infrastructural facilities. The department has one well equipped laboratory to fulfill the needs of undergraduate students. having more than 200 bottle specimens, many preserved reptiles, birds and mammals. It has also a good collection of bones and skeletons for practical purposes and various fauna specimens. The department has a good equipment facility, including microscopes, refrigerators, double distillation water unit, conductivity meter, pH meter and other equipments for carrying out practical sessions of the undergraduate students. The students are also provided with the facility of dissection material so that they learn the method of learning by doing.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Department of Chemistry started its working in 2017 in the College to ensure the teaching of chemistry at under graduate level. The Department ensures the rigour of academic program and the faculty strive ceaselessly, to mesh imagination and learning with creativity and innovation. The thrust is to make students open to the not always harmonious reverberations of learning, but in challenging young people to explore alternative ways of being and seeing and to always unite the language of critique with the language of possibility. The attempt is to imbue the teaching-learning process with the sensitivity that reconciles excellence with humanity, a pedagogy that can break free of rhetoric, shatter myths and rescue imaginations and intuition, using them as resources to conceive and initiate change. The faculty members are known for their expertise in research, teaching and impart practical knowledge on the different branches of the subject. Proper presentations and laboratory visits (CSIR) are organized to enhance the skills of the students.
The Department is located in College building with sufficient infrastructure to make sure teaching at UG level. The department has clicked many of the students who joined different Indian universities for M.Sc programme. Since the roll of the students is increasing day by day. If we intend to live on with this planet, we truly need to understand how it works, and to understand the interactions of the many components that make up the Earth.
INTRODUCTION
The Earth sciences provide an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to a true understanding of our planet. Earth science includes and applies knowledge from biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, and mathematics to tackle complex interdisciplinary issues. Earth science education also improves critical thinking skills. It offers a historical perspective and improves our ability to predict future events. To understand Earth processes that affect us now and tomorrow, geoscientists look for evidence of what happened in the past. This connects students to the past, as well as challenging them to think about the future.
Earth science poses questions that are exciting as well as practical to children and adults alike: Why are some places prone to earthquakes? Why is the beach eroding and what can we do about it? Why isn’t a floodplain a good location to build a house? Where will we get the fuel to power our cars and planes in the future? Where will we get fresh water to drink? How can I help to protect the environment? Earth science problems and issues are ideally suited for an inquiry based education approach — an educational process that most closely resembles the reality of scientific endeavor.

The role of Earth science in meeting society’s needs continues to grow in importance. Earth science develops skills that help students become better problem solvers, including three-dimensional analysis and comprehension of time and scale. Earth scientists use these skills to ensure a supply of clean water, explore for oil, gas, and coal, map the oceans, track severe weather, and discover the Earth materials we need to build our homes and roads, and the minerals and nutrients we need to farm the land. Earth scientists work for a wide range of organizations, including petroleum companies, environmental firms, mining companies, and construction companies. They work in local, state, and national government agencies and teach in our schools, colleges, and universities. Earth scientists also work in non-traditional industries such as telecommunications and financial planning, assisting their organizations to address Earth-related issues that affect their activities.
A Masters Degree is now the standard professional degree for pursuing a career as an Earth scientist. However, training in the Earth sciences builds a foundation for work in other fields, and nearly half of those graduating with Earth science degrees establish careers in fields as varied as engineering, law, systems analysis, and financial management. Earth science provides a strong background for many career paths and instills an understanding of how the Earth system influences the many and varied aspects of human activity. However, many students graduate from high school unaware of the contributions that Earth scientists make to society and the unique problem solving skills that Earth science instills. We must make Earth science education a priority at all levels if we, as a society, are to meet the increasing demands of the future.
The Department of Geology started its working in 2018. The department has well established Geology Lab with all the necessary equipment like Polarizing Microscopes, Rock samples, Minerals samples, Ore samples, and raised relief maps and models. The department of urdu is one of the core Departments of humanities at GDC Sogam. The average enrollment of students in the department remains around five hundred candidates annually. Urdu is offered as Core and generic subject in addition to skill based courses in the subject. The skill course offered in semester four is Learning Skills of Afsana in Urdu. Learning Skills of Drama writing in urdu and Learning Skills of Media writing in urdu are offered as skill courses in fifth and sixth semester respectively. Our key concern is to improve the standard of teaching and learning and to enrich the vocabulary and subject knowledge of the learners . The department organizes seminars, quiz programmers, presentations and group discussions to inculcate the understanding of urdu amongst the learners. Further the department actively involves students in various Co-curricular activities in the college so as to explore the hidden talents of the students.
The department strives hard to promote urdu both as a language and literature at the community level. A formal and conscious approach is undertaken to disseminate information related to the subject to bring back the lost glory to this language.

Established in 2008, the journey of the Department of History twins that of the college. Hundreds of students, majoring in History, have graduated from the college.
The department aims to develop a competitive environment where every student could give his/her best. It not only refines the raw talent of students to encourage career-building and readies them for their professional lives but also strives to inculcate social, ethical, and moral values to make them socially-aware and responsible citizens.
The department adopts interdisciplinary approaches to studies and seeks to infuse a scientific spirit among the students. It makes use of improved teaching methods and aids: lectures, smart boards, tutorials, and online and offline class tests. Teachers work towards making the classroom experience an interactive one in which students are encouraged to get actively involved.
The history curriculum covers themes spanning several millennia. Beginning from the pre-historic times through ancient, medieval, and colonial periods in the subcontinent to several decades into the post-independence India, students are introduced to the historical processes that fashioned the social, political, economic, religious, and cultural formations of the country. Part of the syllabi acquaints students with regional history, thus connecting them to their roots. European history forms a special part of the curriculum. From the emergence of early modern Europe to the end of the cold war, students get a taste of cultural and intellectual trends, political developments, technological progress, emergence of global ideologies, impact of wars, etc. and how these processes and events are still shaping our lives. Besides this, generic electives, introducing basic themes in the history of India and Europe, are meant for non-History students. Architecture and archaeology are taught as skill papers to impart to students the practical knowledge of the discipline and to familiarize them with our culture, aesthetics, and heritage.
The college has a rich library that houses thousands of books and also provides access to dozens of online journals through N-LIST. With more than a hundred titles added in the last two years, the History books section makes for one of the richest contributors to the catalogue.
To make the department more progressive and broad-based, and to promote personality development, we organize seminars, debates, quiz competitions, group discussion, etc. In line with this, an online quiz competition on October 4, 2021, to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday (October 2), and a debate competition on the National Education Day (November 11, 2021) were organized. The department conducts annual educational trips to places of historical significance located in different parts of Kashmir.
Currently, there are on roll over 200 students who have taken up History as a major, skill, or generic elective subject. Among 350 students enrolled by the college this session, 72 opted for History as a core paper, thus clearly giving an idea about the significance of the department for the institution.

At present, Dr. Bilal Ahmad Sheikh is the only faculty member in the department, working as a lecturer since April 2022. He has a PhD degree in History from the Aligarh Muslim University. He is a recipient of UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship. Previously, he taught undergraduate courses at the Department of Law, AMU Malappuram Centre Kerala and Lloyd Law College Delhi. He was on the advisory board of the annual University Magazine of AMU, The Aligarian, in 2018.
His research focuses on the migration and settlement of Afghans during Mughal Period. His research has been published in reputed national and international journals. He has presented research articles in many national and international conferences. He is a member of the Indian History Congress and the South Asian History Conference, Patiala. At the annual Indian History Congress sessions, he is a one-time recipient of Best Paper Award from Indian History Congress.

The department of English at Govt. Degree College Sogam was established in the year 2008, the same year of the establishment of college itself. The department has a total number of two (02) sanctioned posts out of which only one (01) post stands filled. The department has a strength of over 1100 students in General English as the compulsory subject and later English Literature and other skill courses like (Writing Skills & ELT) were also introduced as subjects of choice in the department. Since establishment, one of the major responsibilities of the department has been the “General English” course which is taught to all undergraduate courses of Science and Arts.
At present the department is headed by Prof. Sajad Ahmad (M.A B.Ed. SET) and is running with full vibrancy to inculcate the essential language and communicative skills in the students so that they can compete well and perform better in the toughest competitions. However, the fact is that due to lack of exposure of the subject, very little number of students used to opt for Arabic subject. In this regard, the concerned faculty member(s) have been taking many steps to aware students about the scope and job opportunities (in and outside J&K) in this subject.
Moreover, due to the counseling at the time of admiaion process, attention of the students has been grabbed towards the scope of the subject which has resulted in the student enrollment in Arabic. Thus, the number of students has been increasing each year considerably.
The department mainly focuses on translation and interpretation and tries to shift the subject towards skill oriented. Arabic language skills boost marketability when it comes to job opportunities. The Department of Environmental Science started its working in 2008 in the College and is taught to all the streams as a compulsory subject. The Department ensures the rigour of academic program and the faculty strive ceaselessly, to mesh imagination and learning with creativity and innovation. The main focus of teaching this subject is to ensure environmental awareness and to incorporate ethics among students regarding environmental protection and fundamental duties w.r.t Environment. The attempt is to imbue the teaching-learning process with the sensitivity that reconciles excellence with humanity, a pedagogy that can break free of rhetoric, shatter myths and rescue imaginations and intuition, using them as resources to conceive and initiate change. The faculty members are known for their expertise in research, teaching and impart practical knowledge on the different branches of the subject. Proper presentations are organized to enhance the skills of the students.
The Department is located in College building with sufficient infrastructure to make sure teaching at UG level. The department has clicked many of the students who joined different Indian universities for M.Sc programme. Since the roll of the students is increasing day by day. Presently the Department has one permanent faculty, is carrying out student strength of around 500.

DEPARTMENT PROFILE
The Department of Geography was established in the year 2019.The Department has 90 students of different streams. The Department has an extensive lab equipped with a well sophisticated models & maps. The department has the objective of producing geographers of high standard and to serve as a valuable for industry and society. Teaching is imparted in well-designed, industry-oriented curriculum which is right blend of class room teaching, lab work and guest lectures.
The department has only one vacancy of faculty member, which is fulfilled by the academic arrangement lecturer.

The department of Mathematics at Govt. Degree College Sogam was established in the year 2008, the same year of the establishment of college itself. The department has a total number of one (01) sanctioned post which stands unfilled. Since establishment, one of the major responsibilities of the department has been the “Mathematics” course which is taught to all undergraduate courses of Science and Arts. At present the department is headed by Dr. Masroor Mohammad on temporary basis and is running with full vibrancy. The vision of the department has been to strive for academic excellence and to nurture undergraduate students of this remote area by adopting various methods of teaching-learning to motivate our students in the learning of mathematics. In addition to lecture method we frequently use demonstration method, classroom discussion so that they can feel themselves fit in their professional environments. The college takes great pride in inducting Mathematics as a compulsory subject at undergraduate level and the main strength of the mathematics department is the coordination among faculty members and students. The department has produced good and positive results over the years and is growing very fast with the changing times only to ensure that whatever is imparted to students is at par with the best academic campuses of the valley. The department has also from time to time arranged certain programmes related to role and scope of mathematics which really help in fine tuning of the undergraduate students. The department is committed to promote excellence in teaching learning and foster a spirit academic honesty and dedication among all students of the college. In addition the faculty members also perform the role of mentors to provide necessary guidance to the students of the department.

Political Science Department started its working in the year 2010. Political Science is a part of UG course in Arts. Various papers as per the prescribed syllabus of the Kashmir University are taught. The post of lecturer and subject of Political Science was sanctioned vide government order no: -335-HE of 2010 Dated: -09-09-2010. Presently one permanent faculty member namely Prof Mehbooba Bano is working as Associate Professor.
Over the last 13 years the college has flourished and the department has progressed vigorously. Under CBCS various core, Skill enhancement and generic courses as per the prescribed syllabus of the university are taught. Besides, the above students are made aware about the current political affairs around the globe.

Besides the prescribed syllabus/routine classwork in the departments, the following teaching methods are adopted to enhance the academic excellence of the students:
The department conducts periodic meetings to review the performance of the department and discuss various issues regarding the completion of Syllabus, management of Timetable, availability of books in the college library and other allied matters.
The department is not having a separate library but there is a large number of reference and text books written by different foreign and Indian authors available in the college library. A good number of books is added periodically to enrich the stock of the library.

The Department of Botany was established in 2017. The main thrust area of the department is to teach under-graduate students of botany. The teaching areas include; Plant Physiology, Cytogenetics & Plant Breeding, Plant Anatomy and Embryology, Cell and Molecular biology, Biodiversity, Plant Ecology and Taxonomy, Plant Pathology, Medicinal Botany etc. In addition, the subject is also taught as ‘skill courses’ so as to make students capable of earning in the form of part or full time business after graduation. At present the department has one sanctioned post which is unfilled. The department is organizing field trips for the students of different semesters to acquaint them with the regional flora.
