The department of English at Govt. Degree College Sogam was established in the year 2008, the same year of the establishment of college itself. The department has a strength of over 1100 students in General English as the compulsory subject and later English Literature and other skill courses like (Writing Skills & ELT) were also introduced as subjects of choice in the department. Since establishment, one of the major responsibilities of the department has been the “General English” course which is taught to all undergraduate courses of Science and Arts.
At present the department is headed by Mr. Naseer Ahmad and is running with full vibrancy to inculcate the essential language and communicative skills in the students so that they can compete well and perform better in the toughest competitions. The vision of the department has been to strive for academic excellence and to nurture undergraduate students of this remote area with linguistic skills and creative abilities so that they can feel themselves fit in their professional environments. The college takes great pride in inducting English as a compulsory subject at undergraduate level. The department has produced good and positive results over the years and is growing fastly with the changing times only to ensure that whatever is imparted to students is at par with the best academic campuses of the valley. The department has also from time to time arranged certain programmes related to Literary and cultural activities which really help in fine tuning of the undergraduate students. The Department is committed to promote excellence in teaching learning and foster a spirit academic honesty and dedication among all students of the college.
Welcome to the Department of English. Since the establishment of the college, the prime focus of the department has been its students who hail from diverse educational backgrounds of this remote area of district Kupwara. The department has an intake capacity of 320 students in General English and 40 students in English Literature. The department is working in a committed manner to refine communication skills of the students and develop a taste for English Literature among them. The department offers English Literature as major/minor Course, Communication Skills as Ability Enhancement Course, English Writing Skills and English Language Teaching as skill-based courses. The department focusses on the holistic development of students by providing them opportunities to showcase their talent in curricular and co-curricular activities. The department has a sanctioned strength of two (02) post which stand filled at present. The faculty tries its best to provide students the required exposure indispensable for understanding English Literature along with its different genres. I am sure that in times to come many students from the picturesque valley of Lolab would join this department, imbibe the requisite skills, gain adequate knowledge, pass with flying colors and make us proud by making it to the selection lists of various competitive exams and PG programs offered by the reputed universities across India. I am confident that our students will exemplify professional competence once they graduate and enter into their respective professional careers thereby justifying the reputation and the ability of the department.
