Year of Establishment 2008

Political Science Department started its working in the year 2008 and the post of lecturer in the subject of Political Science was sanctioned vide government order no:- 335-HE of 2010 Dated:- 09-09-2010.

 Political Science is one of the core subjects of social science stream that involves the study of Political institutions, Government systems and political behavior. Political Science focuses on theory and practice at the local, State, National and international levels. Political Science is a part of UG course in Arts stream Various papers as per the prescribed syllabus of the Kashmir University are taught here which include Core, Skill enhancement, Generic courses, under CBCS and other subjects like Major, Minor, Skill, Value Added and Multidisciplinary    under National Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 which was implemented in 2022, Besides the above, students are made aware about the current political affairs around the globe.

  Over the last 15 years the college has flourished and the department has progressed vigorously.

Objectives

The department makes efforts to engage students in understanding contemporary world politics and providing them a platform to become active Citizens in the democratic process.

Department is trying to inculcate political values among the students through the process of political socialization.

Department seeks to develop human and moral values among the students for creating peaceful human society.

 Vision

To provide affordable quality education, equipping students with political awareness, to develop leadership qualities among them.

Mission

 The department of Political Science provides students with a broad based political education and prepare them as active citizens at local, National and International levels.

Teaching Techniques

Besides the prescribed syllabus/routine classwork in the department, the following teaching methods are adopted to enhance the academic excellence of the students:

Class Tests, Internal Assignments, Group Discussions, Presentation viva voce

Departmental Meetings

The department conducts periodic meetings to review the performance of the department and discuss various issues regarding the completion of Syllabus, management of Timetable, availability of books in the college library and other allied matters.

Departmental Library

The department is not having a separate library but there are a large number of reference and text books written by different foreign and Indian authors available in the college library. A good number of books are added periodically to enrich the stock of the library.

SWOC analysis and Future Plans of the Department

Strength:

Stable administration since the inception of the college.

Classes are conducted properly Lectures are conducted on contemporary issues too.

Qualified, motivated and competent faculty with a blend of high experience.

Effective teaching learning process. Supporting students through Tutorial/ Remedial classes.

Weakness:

The majority of students come from poor socio economic background.

Poor transport facilities for most of the students.

Lack of separate building for the department.

Opportunities

To use new techniques in teaching learning programmes.

To provide counselling for students to become more employable.

Wide scope for the students to build up their carrier.

Challenges

Backwardness and poverty of the students.

To enhance the percentage  of attendance of the students in classes.

Encouraging  students for competitive examinations and higher studies.

Future plans

The department of Political Science suggests to start a Bachelor’s Course in Human Rights that comes under the purview of Political Science department. The department of Political Science also plans to have a subject tour yearly for the students to make them aware about the historical development of Political Science in India

HOD Message

Dr. Tabzeer Yaseen

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the students who are interested to take Political Science as one of the subjects in their undergraduate Programme. The Department of Political Science GDC SOGAM Started it’s working from 2008. At present, the department has 2 faculty members. The Teaching-Learning Method of the department includes Classroom lectures, Group Discussions, seminars and showing Documentaries and Movies on various course related topics with active participation of the students. Occasionally internal evaluations like Viva, class tests, class presentations, assignment are held to evaluate students’ performance. Apart from the academic activities the department also organizes various programs and encourages students to participate in many activities like quiz competitions, youth parliament, etc. which helps to build up their morale and boost their confidence. The faculty members also share a very friendly relationship with the students to create a very favorable environment so that the students can access and approach the teachers for any query.
