The Department of urdu was established with one sanctioned  post in 2008 with the establishment of College itself.. Presently the department is headed by Prof. Javaid Hassain Najar. The  department of urdu is one of the core Departments of humanities at GDC Sogam. The average enrollment of students in the department remains around five hundred candidates annually. Urdu is offered as Core and generic subject in addition to skill based courses in the subject. The skill course offered in semester four is Learning Skills of Afsana in Urdu. Learning Skills of  Drama writing in urdu and Learning Skills of  Media writing in urdu are offered as skill courses in fifth and sixth semester respectively. Our key  concern is to improve the standard of teaching and learning and to enrich the vocabulary and subject knowledge of the learners . The department organizes seminars, quiz programmers, presentations and group discussions to inculcate the understanding of urdu amongst the learners. Further the department actively involves students in various Co-curricular activities in the college so as to explore the hidden talents of the students.

The department strives hard to promote urdu both as a language and literature at the community level. A formal and conscious approach is undertaken to disseminate information related to the subject to bring back the lost glory to this language.

Dear students, I heartily welcome you to the Department of Urdu, GDC Sogam which is one of the important departments of the institution. Urdu has become a source of expression, feelings, thoughts and aspirations. Learning Urdu helps improve your cognitive abilities. Urdu is one of the most developed modern Indian languages. It not only has a long history but also a rich literary tradition. It has its origins in the western part of Uttar Pradesh, but it has not remained confined to a single geographical area. The Urdu speaking people are found all over the Indian subcontinent. It is widely understood in South Asian Countries. Its role in the promotion of cultural and communal harmony and in the freedom struggle of the country is well known. Urdu, for millions of Indians, is not only a language but is an integral part of their cultural identity. The department of Urdu offers not only formal education but also other activities and programs with a mission to provide access to quality education to diverse students.
