Among other science faculties, the Department of Zoology was also started in 2017 in the College to teach the students at under graduate level. Zoology deals with understanding of the animal world from outside as well as at molecular level. The history of zoology traces the study of the animal kingdom from ancient to modern times. Even the prehistoric man needed to study the animals and plants in his environment in order to exploit them and survive.
The department of Zoology is housed in the main College building with spacious class rooms and laboratory facilities. Every effort is being made to make the subject interesting and attractive through teaching and demonstrations. The Department is competent in academic excellence and offers study courses like B.Sc with zoology as one of the core subjects and provides opportunities to educate and inspire students for pursuing higher education in many job oriented streams. If zoology is taken as one of the subjects in graduate studies, one will have an opportunity to study other subsidiary fields like Animal Biodiversity, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates, Developmental Biology, Immunology, Physiology and Applied Zoology (Apiculture, Aquaculture and Sericulture). On regular basis new equipments are being added to laboratories to meet the current needs of students in zoology and also new text books are added every year to the library. The study tours are also being organized for the students to collect fauna from different areas of Kashmir as a requirement of their studies.
The department has developed good infrastructural facilities. The department has one well equipped laboratory to fulfill the needs of undergraduate students. having more than 200 bottle specimens, many preserved reptiles, birds and mammals. It has also a good collection of bones and skeletons for practical purposes and various fauna specimens. The department has a good equipment facility, including microscopes, refrigerators, double distillation water unit, conductivity meter, pH meter and other equipments for carrying out practical sessions of the undergraduate students. The students are also provided with the facility of dissection material so that they learn the method of learning by doing.
